Prosecco is a delightful Italian sparkling wine that is rightly hugely popluar. Originating from the northeastern regions of Veneto (Valpolicella, Amarone, etc..) and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Prosecco is named after the village of Prosecco in the province of Trieste. Prosecco is a versatile and bubbly addition to many popular cocktails, such as Aperol Spritz, Bellini and Mimosa.

The primary grape used in Prosecco production is the Glera grape (formerly known as Prosecco until 2009. The name was changed to avoid confusion with the wine itself). This grape variety is indigenous to the hills of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and it gives Prosecco its distinctive light, aromatic, and slightly sweet flavor profile.

Prosecco is made using the Charmat Method, where primary and secondary fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The Charmat Method is generally quicker than the Traditional Method, resulting in a lighter, fruitier wine like Prosecco. Some, like Andreola, have additional maturation in bottles after this. Prosecco is produced in two main styles: Spumante (fully sparkling) and Frizzante (semi-sparkling). The wine is also available in a still version called Tranquillo, although it is less common. The region’s mild climate and fertile soils create ideal conditions for growing Glera grapes, resulting in wines that are fresh, fruity, and effervescent.

The history of Prosecco dates back over 2,000 years, with its origins closely tied to the Roman Empire. The first references to Prosecco can be traced back to a wine called “Puccino,” which was highly regarded by the Romans for its quality. During the Middle Ages, Prosecco flourished under the influence of the Venetian Republic, which helped spread the wine beyond its regional boundaries.

In 2019, the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco region was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its cultural and historical significance. This region, along with the nearby Asolo Prosecco area, is designated as a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), ensuring the highest quality standards for Prosecco production.

Prosecco is quite the versatile wine when it comes to food pairings, thanks to its light, fresh, and slightly sweet character.
